You Pretend You’re High

I was flicking through the music channels on the telly the other day, the free ones that come as standard with our box, and on one of them was an hour’s worth of videos from the 1990s of bands fronted by women. This one came up within thirty seconds…

I really like this song. I bought it for Mrs Swiss who loved it when it was released back in 1996. The 7″ came in a cloth bag with rubber bits on it and it’s still there in the 7″ boxes downstairs. The tune is insistent, naggingly catchy, the snarky lyrics raise questions about who the subject is and I always had a soft spot for Shirley Manson. It also makes really effective use of Topper Headon’s drums from Train In Vain.

Brody

Brody Dalle is one of those punk girls our mothers used to warn us about- fags, tattoos, black eyeliner, bad attitude. Which only made them more attractive. She was in LA punks The Distillers and then the more alt-rock Spinnerette; both have engine revving guitars and a massive drum sound, her big husky voice and Joan Jett looks. If my LA punk gossip knowledge is correct she was married to Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and is now married to Queen Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme. Brody has a solo album coming out- there is a song below to listen to (with Shirley Manson and Emily from Warpaint on backing vox). I quite like it in a regressive shoutalong kind of way.

Shirley

I read a review of the new Garbage album yesterday, a band I hadn’t thought about or heard for years. I don’t think I own anything by them other than a 7″ single of Stupid Girl I bought for Mrs Swiss way back when (she liked the song, I wasn’t suggesting she was a stupid girl) and the song they did on the soundtrack to Romeo And Juliet (how very 90s). And whilst I can’t imagine I’ll be buying their new album, it did remind me that I used to have a bit of a thing for Shirley Manson.
