Shark Ridden Waters

A creatures of the deep connection today- here’s SFA’s Gruff Rhys with Shark Ridden Waters, a lovely little piece of Welsh psychedelia from his 2011 solo album Hotel Shampoo. A song that sounds very simple but there’s a lot more going on than you might think. Which reminds me- in all of last week’s fuss Super Furry Animals released a new single and I haven’t heard it yet.

Whatever You Wanna Do, Do It Now Pay Later

Super Furry Animals are all over the place again, getting rave reviews and rightly so. This song, from 1997’s Radiator album, is an infectious joy, giddy and excited, with a singalong falsetto chorus, mad and manic instrumentation and some really funny lines as well.

Play It Cool

It’s Instamatic And It’s Full Of Flair

I haven’t followed Super Furry Animals as closely as I should have but what I’ve got I love- the Welsh language lp (Mwng), the Play It Cool single and the Ice Hockey Hair ep especially. The lead track off Ice Hockey Hair is masterful shiny, psychedelic rock from 1998. Which is quite a long time ago now.

Up above is Man Ray himself, who didn’t have ice hockey hair.
