S.C.U.M.’s album closer Whitechapel is a blast of goth-synth goodness; the combination of bass and keys does something to my central nervous system and the hairs on the back of my neck. I had an mp3 of them doing it on Marc Radcliffe’s Radio 6 show but can’t find it, and it’s possibly even better than the album version. Maybe it didn’t survive the last hard-drive decluttering. In which case I made a mistake deleting it. This is the version from Alone Into Eyes from last year.

S.C.U.M.’s lp from last year, Alone Into Eyes, has been on my stereo quite a bit recently, especially album closer Whitechapel, which is dreamy, fluid, bass-led and synthy gothpop. Or something like that. So it makes sense that they covered 586 from New Order’s Power, Corruption And Lies album for a magazine cd a month or two ago. And here it is.

S.C.U.M. are a South London bunch- gloomy, gothic, a bit electronic, a bit rock. Kind of like The Horrors (the bassist is brother of a Horror), they sound like they look. They’ve got a new album out- Again Into Eyes- and this song was their debut single back in 2008 and is very good, if you like that kind of thing.
